Hair and Make-up trials

It was important for me to trial out hair and make-up techniques in order for me to create a effective look that I can use for images for my mod magazine. The mod culture was popular in the 1960's and therefore I have previously investigated into popular hair and make-up styles from this time. I am hoping to bring these looks with iconic mod clothes to create a look which readers will initially recognise and relate to the genre.

Make-up
I learnt from my previous research that large eyeliner was popular and so I practised two techniques.
The first one involved a series a flicks with eyeliner combined with white eyeshadow. I think this look really captures what I am wanting to achieve. The eyeliner is placed where I wanted, along the lining around the eye and in the crease. The eyeliner was thick enough to stand out. Also the use of a mascara emphasized the look.

In the second look I used green shadow with a high eyeliner stroke. Colour eyeshadow like greens and yellows appeared many times in my research and so I wanted to try these out. I think the use of colour was effective, it blended well with eyeliner. The eyeliner lines were thin and neat which is what I wanted.

I used a nude pink lipstick with every look and this is because the lip-stick colours were not bright on female mods. They focused on the eye make-up, therefore choose a subtle colour.

Hair
First hairstyle I tried out was a beehive inspired look. This is because many female mods had hairstyles which were wavy and had a lot of volume. To achieve this volume I backcombed  my hair and pinned it in place on the crowd of my hair. The rest of the hair was curled and was left down. I think this look is extremely recognisable to the mod genre and the time period when mod was most influential.
I added in a headband as my research taught me that these were popular. I think the black thick band emphasised the volume in my hair.

The second look I did with my hair was I pulled it down tightly on my head and pinned in place. This was to create a short hair looked. Many female mods had a pixie cut which I wanted to copy. This look could also be related with Twiggy, who was in her prime in the 1960's. She was famous for her pixie cut.

Edits
I used the images as a opportunity to practicing my editing. I used www.lunapic.com and www.picmonkey.com and tried out many different effects. I want to create a look for a 'old' photo type, similar to the colours used in the quadrophenia film. I therefore used faded effects. I think the photo which was most successful was the black and white image. This caused the black eye-liner to really stand out. I need to experiment more with the editing to order to create the look I want.

Feedback
I asked two people who are aged between 20-25 years old on feedback on my looks and ideas. This way I can find out what  my target market believe is successful or not.
1)First person" I think the hair looks very good and the styles you tried out do not need improving. The headband was a great idea. For a different style you could try out doing big, curls as these were popular in female mods.
In the make-up, I think it would be good to try out bright blue eyeshadows as these were heavily used by mod girls. The eyeliner looks great and is very similar to your research images.
I like the editing effect on the image of the beehive. I think it shows off the hair style more."
2)Second person "I believe the looks match the pictures in your research well. The make-up is well mastered. To improve the hair on the pixie cut, you could gel down the hair to emphasize the shape of the style. My favourite edit was also the second one as the colours blend well."
